The Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway is experiencing such heavy traffic that it seems as if Hyderabad is emptying out. Officials estimate that this situation may continue for four to five days. Staff at the Panthangi toll plaza in Choutuppal area of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district reported that approximately 21,000 vehicles traveled towards Vijayawada between midnight on Friday and 8 AM on Saturday, and another 22,000 vehicles between 8 AM and 4 PM. This averages out to about 2,700 vehicles per hour.
While on normal days, approximately 40,000 vehicles travel in both directions combined, currently, a massive number of vehicles are moving in only one direction. Based on last year's traffic experiences, the police have taken precautionary measures to prevent traffic congestion. Due to ongoing road works in Chityal, alternative routes have been set up and vehicles are being diverted. Vehicles heading towards Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram are being diverted towards the 365BB highway at Tekumatla in Suryapet mandal. Suryapet SP Narasimha and DSP Prasanna Kumar monitored the traffic situation using a drone camera and wished the commuters a safe journey, even distributing roses to some.
