France has approved a bill that completely bans social media use for children under 15. With this decision, France becomes the second country to implement such a restriction, following Australia.
Currently, seven countries are reviewing social media restrictions for teenagers, including the United Kingdom, Egypt, Denmark, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Germany. Under the new rules, social media companies are responsible for verifying users’ ages.
Companies will need to estimate age using online behavior, interaction patterns, and facial and voice recognition technologies. The French government says this measure is a crucial step to protect the mental health and safety of children and adolescents.
