The central government has ordered an immediate suspension of Television Rating Points (TRP) reports related to television news channels. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued directions to the Broadcast Audience Research Council to halt the release of TRP data for four weeks or until further orders. The government stated that the situation would be reviewed if necessary before taking a final decision on resuming the ratings.
According to official sources, the decision comes after some television news channels aired sensational and speculative reports regarding the tense situation in West Asia. Authorities expressed concern that such coverage could create unnecessary panic and confusion among the public, particularly among families of people who might be in affected regions. The move has once again triggered debate over the TRP-driven competition among news channels and its impact on responsible reporting.
