The Central Cabinet has approved a budget of ₹11,718 crore for the 2027 population census, the government announced. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the 2027 exercise will be the country’s first primarily digital census, with special emphasis on data security and a digital enumeration framework now in place. The census will be carried out across the nation in two phases.
The first phase, focused on house-listing and related preparatory work, is scheduled from 1 April to September 2026. The second phase, the actual population enumeration, is planned for February 2027.
