The Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has temporarily suspended the fortification process of rice distributed under the free ration scheme. The decision follows reports that a study by Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur found that the nutritional value of fortified rice may decline when stored for a long period. The Centre stated that the process will remain on hold until a more effective method of delivering nutrients is identified.
However, the government clarified that there will be no reduction in the ration quota for beneficiaries. In Telangana, ration card holders continue to receive 6 kilograms of rice per person free of cost. Officials confirmed that distribution under the existing scheme will proceed without any changes.
