In a significant development in the Unnao rape case that shocked the nation, the Delhi High Court granted bail to former BJP MLA and expelled leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Hearing his appeal petition, the court suspended his sentence till the disposal of the appeal and released him on bail with conditions, including a personal bond of ₹15 lakh, noting that Sengar has already spent seven years in prison.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), however, opposed the bail, arguing that Sengar’s release could influence the case and pose a threat to the victim’s safety. Taking a strong stand, the CBI announced on Saturday that it will challenge the Delhi High Court’s order suspending Sengar’s sentence by approaching the Supreme Court.
Sengar was convicted for raping a minor girl at his residence in 2017 after luring her with the promise of a job. In December 2018, a trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The bail order has triggered sharp reactions from the survivor and her family. On Friday evening, the survivor met Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and reiterated her resolve to fight until justice is delivered, calling the bail a death warrant for her family.
