

Senior Maoist leader Chelluru Narayana Rao has surrendered to Andhra Pradesh Police in Vijayawada, marking a major development in the state’s efforts to control Naxal activities. Narayana Rao was an important member of the AOB State Committee and also worked in the State Military Commission. Known by the alias Somanna, he played key roles in the banned People’s War group and was the Commander of the 3rd Company under the Central Regional Committee.
He took charge after the deaths of senior Maoist leaders Gazarla Ravi and Aruna in separate encounters in Alluri and Sitarama Raju districts. A native of Bathupuram village in Vajrapu Kothur mandal of Srikakulam district, Narayana Rao surrendered along with several other Maoists belonging to different committees. During the surrender, they also reportedly handed over weapons to the police.
According to the Andhra Pradesh DGP, this surrender is a significant step towards making the state free from Naxal influence. He stated that nine Maoists surrendered following the government’s appeal and assured that all benefits and support would be provided to those who choose to give up violence and join the mainstream.
