The Election Commission is likely to announce the schedule for the assembly elections for the states of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry soon. EC sources said that an announcement to this effect is likely to be made within a week. A team led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is currently reviewing the election arrangements in West Bengal. It is reported that the election schedule is likely to be announced after the team returns to Delhi after this visit.
The EC has already reviewed the election arrangements in the states of Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. On the other hand, several political parties have requested the Election Commission to hold the elections in a maximum of two phases. Leaders of TMC, BJP, CPM, Congress and AAP participated in a meeting held in Kolkata and expressed their views on the security arrangements for the elections. They also asked the EC to take strict measures to prevent anti-social activities during the elections.
