The shortage of diesel supply across the Telugu states is having a serious impact on the film industry. Several key shooting schedules in Hyderabad have reportedly been cancelled due to the crisis. Large generators, cameras, editing units and air-conditioning systems in artists’ caravans require hundreds of litres of diesel every hour. Producers say that even a single day of halted shooting can result in losses worth lakhs of rupees. There are also concerns that post-production work for films scheduled for release in June and July may face delays. Apart from Hyderabad, regions such as Guntur and Tirupati are also experiencing similar issues.
Officials state that panic buying has led to diesel stocks depleting rapidly, with demand surging far beyond normal levels. Some film units are reportedly purchasing diesel from the black market in an effort to continue shoots, but this has significantly increased production costs. Producers’ associations have appealed to the government for immediate intervention to resolve the issue. Industry representatives warn that unless diesel supply normalises soon, several film release dates may need to be postponed. Many are hoping the Tollywood industry overcomes this challenging phase at the earliest.
