The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are regarded as the highest honour in the global film industry and a lifelong dream for many actors and filmmakers. Interestingly, “Oscar” is not the official name of the award; its formal title is the Academy Award of Merit. The nickname reportedly originated when Academy librarian Margaret Herrick remarked that the statuette resembled her uncle Oscar, and the name gradually gained worldwide popularity. The iconic golden statuette weighs about 3.8 kilograms (8.5 pounds) and stands 13.5 inches tall, making it heavier than it appears on stage.
Despite its prestige, the Oscar trophy cannot be freely sold. According to a 1951 Academy rule, winners or their heirs must first offer the award back to the Academy for just one dollar if they wish to part with it. The ceremony itself is a grand spectacle, costing an estimated ₹500 crore to organize each year, covering everything from the red carpet and lighting to elaborate guest arrangements. Since 2002, the prestigious event has been held permanently at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, a venue that has witnessed many historic cinematic moments.
