The controversy surrounding Kollywood star Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan has reached the Supreme Court. Although the apex court recently declined to intervene in the matter of the film’s release, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has taken another significant legal step.
Anticipating that the film’s producers may challenge the Madras High Court verdict before the Supreme Court, the CBFC has filed a caveat petition in advance. This move ensures that if the producers approach the apex court, no orders will be passed without first hearing the arguments of the censor board. Due to certification-related issues, Jana Nayagan, which was scheduled for release on the 9th of this month, was postponed. On the same day, a single bench of the Madras High Court directed the CBFC to grant the film a U/A certificate. However, the CBFC challenged this order before the Madras High Court’s Division Bench.
Subsequently, the Division Bench imposed a temporary stay on the issuance of the censor certificate. In response, the film’s production house approached the Supreme Court. The apex court, however, declined to interfere in the release process and advised the producers to seek relief from the Madras High Court Division Bench instead.
