In the past, a director's real test came on the day a film was released. If audiences liked the movie, the filmmaker received appreciation; otherwise, criticism was inevitable. However, the arrival of OTT platforms has completely changed the scenario. Even films that fail to achieve the expected response in theatres continue to face criticism after their digital premieres. In particular, certain scenes from movies are becoming subjects of discussion and trolling across social media platforms.
Scenes from films such as ‘The Raja Saab’, ‘Peddi’ and ‘The Paradise’ have already attracted memes and online criticism. Earlier, a film's theatrical performance largely determined its fate. Now, audiences watching movies from the comfort of their homes closely analyse individual scenes and openly share their opinions online. This has created additional pressure on filmmakers to be more careful while developing stories and designing scenes. With digital releases giving audiences another opportunity to evaluate films, OTT platforms are increasingly being viewed as an additional test of a director's filmmaking skills.
