Drinking coffee may do more than keep you awake it could also support liver health, according to a recent study. Researchers found that people who regularly consume coffee may have a lower risk of developing serious liver conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, experts stress that the findings do not mean everyone should start drinking five cups of coffee a day.
The study, published in the Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology journal, analyzed health data from nearly 355,000 participants in the UK Biobank over more than a decade. It found that people who drank five or more cups of coffee daily had a 32% lower risk of cirrhosis, a 47% lower risk of liver cancer, and a 42% lower risk of death from liver disease. Similar benefits were also observed in people who consumed decaffeinated coffee, suggesting that antioxidants and polyphenols not just caffeine may help protect the liver.
Health experts advise drinking coffee with little or no sugar, as excessive sugar and flavored creamers may reduce its potential benefits. They also caution that excessive caffeine intake can cause anxiety, insomnia, rapid heartbeat, and digestive issues. Pregnant women, people with heart conditions, and those sensitive to caffeine should consult a doctor before increasing their coffee intake.
