The Women’s Commission has expressed serious concern over the alleged illegal collection of eggs from economically vulnerable women and the delay in taking action against the hospitals and laboratories suspected of being involved. The Commission criticised the authorities for registering cases only against a few agents while allegedly failing to initiate action against the hospitals and laboratories accused of being the main players in the operation. Despite earlier directions to conduct a comprehensive investigation and take strict action against those responsible, the Commission said there had been no clear progress.
During her visit to meet the affected women, Women’s Commission Chairperson Nerella Sharada was reportedly informed about the alleged involvement of Indira IVF Centre, Narmada Fertility Centre, Oasis Fertility Centre, Sadguru ART Centre and Padmaja Fertility Centre. The complainants also mentioned a doctor named Hussain. The Commission expressed dissatisfaction over the reported failure to trace him or register a case against him. It has once again directed senior Health Department officials to investigate the allegations against the hospitals and IVF centres and take strict action against those found responsible. The Commission warned that delays in addressing violations affecting women’s bodily autonomy, dignity and health could have serious consequences.
