A key discussion on increasing the minimum monthly pension for Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) pensioners may take place at the organisation’s 240th board meeting scheduled for November 19 in Gir, Gujarat. According to unofficial information attributed to EPFO sources, the minimum pension hike proposal may feature on the meeting’s agenda, although no official announcement confirming this has been made. The Central Government has maintained a minimum monthly pension of ₹1,000 under the scheme since September 2014. Retired employees’ associations and trade unions have long demanded that the minimum pension be raised to ₹7,500 and that dearness allowance also be provided, arguing that the existing amount is insufficient to meet present-day living expenses. The Centre, however, has cited the financial burden associated with increasing monthly pension payments.
The issue has gained further attention following the reported increase in the EPFO’s mandatory coverage wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. Separately, the Bombay High Court has reportedly granted relief to six retired employees who had submitted joint options to receive pensions based on higher salaries. The court questioned EPFO’s rejection of their applications on the grounds of rules governing provident fund trusts of exempted establishments. It clarified that applications should not be rejected merely because the trust rules impose a ceiling on the employer’s contribution or do not expressly provide for contributions towards higher pensions. The minimum pension proposal remains subject to official confirmation, and any decision on an increase will depend on the relevant authorities.
