The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed new regulations that would impose a maximum four-year stay for international students studying in the United States. If approved by Congress, students wishing to remain in the country beyond four years would be required to obtain fresh authorization. The proposal would replace the existing "Duration of Status (D/S)" system, under which F-1 visa holders are currently allowed to stay in the US until they complete their academic programs. The move could significantly impact nearly 330,000 Indian students currently pursuing higher education in the country.
The proposed rules would also introduce fixed periods of stay for J-1 exchange visitors and I visa holders, including foreign media representatives. Separately, the US administration has proposed restoring the "Public Charge" policy, under which immigrants receiving certain government benefits—such as food assistance, Medicaid and housing vouchers—could become ineligible for permanent residency (Green Cards). Both proposals are currently under legislative review and will take effect only if approved.
