The United States is preparing to take a significant decision regarding Russian oil, considering the removal of existing exemptions granted for its purchase. Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Washington is planning to reimpose sanctions on Russian crude. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed this while addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Responding to a query, Rubio stated that the administration intends to end these exemptions at the earliest, emphasizing that imposing sanctions on Russian oil remains a key objective of US policy.
He further explained that the exemptions were initially granted for a limited period to stabilize global oil supply during times of uncertainty. However, with changing geopolitical conditions, the US Treasury Department will decide on the next course of action. These exemptions were first introduced in March and later extended twice to avoid disruptions in supply as crude oil prices surged globally due to the West Asia crisis. The current extension is set to expire on the 17th of this month.
