Supreme Court of India has ruled that candidates possessing higher qualifications than required for a post may not be eligible if such eligibility affects rightful applicants. The court made the observation while setting aside a Madras High Court order that had directed reinstatement of a dismissed bank attendant.
The bench, comprising Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan, upheld the bank’s decision to terminate the employee, who had allegedly concealed his graduation qualification while applying for a job meant for candidates with up to Class 10 education. The court emphasized that recruitment rules exist to ensure fair opportunities for intended beneficiaries and to prevent competition imbalance caused by overqualified candidates.
