Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has warned that the impact of El Niño could lead to serious challenges in drinking water supply, irrigation, agriculture and power availability in the coming months. During a review meeting with officials on the potential effects, he directed them to prepare a comprehensive action plan and take preventive measures from now until June. He stressed that early assessment and coordinated planning are essential to avoid a crisis similar to the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chief Minister said the government was prepared to spend as needed to purchase electricity if necessary, but expressed concern over its availability in the market. He urged officials to promote power conservation, prevent even a drop of water from being wasted and plan carefully for drinking water and irrigation needs. He also called for public awareness campaigns through cinema, the media, cultural programmes and other platforms, involving people from the village level to the state level in conserving water and electricity.
