Diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war in West Asia have gained renewed attention after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with US President Donald Trump over the phone. During the conversation on Friday, Putin reportedly conveyed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s views and outlined Iran’s proposed approach to resolving the conflict with the United States, according to the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin had shared Iran’s position with Trump, but Moscow did not disclose how the US president responded.
Before speaking with Trump, Putin met Pezeshkian on the sidelines of a summit in Turkmenistan. Russia has previously expressed interest in helping mediate efforts to restore peace in West Asia. However, the Kremlin has not revealed the key details of Iran’s proposals or whether Washington is willing to consider them. The latest conversation has renewed attention on Russia’s potential diplomatic role, although the prospects for a settlement remain unclear.
