Reliance Industries is set to make an investment of nearly ₹1 lakh crore in Andhra Pradesh after securing the Chintalapudi and Recherla coal blocks in Eluru district through the Centre's recent e-auction. The company plans to establish an underground coal gasification project, a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. Reliance representatives recently met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to present the project's roadmap and implementation strategy. The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The Chintalapudi block is estimated to hold 904.94 million tonnes of coal, while the Recherla block contains around 2,225.67 million tonnes, taking the total reserves to over 3.13 billion tonnes. Since the coal deposits lie at depths exceeding 600 metres, underground coal gasification has been identified as the most viable extraction method instead of conventional mining. The landmark project is targeted for full-scale completion by 2029 and is expected to strengthen India's clean coal technology ecosystem.
