Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appears determined to proceed with the INDIA bloc’s protest against alleged ‘vote chori’ at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1. Local traders’ associations have urged the organisers to postpone the march, citing the potential impact on businesses during the Diwali festive season. However, in a post on X, Rahul called on people who want to protect democracy and the Constitution to join the protest. He described the march as a people’s movement rather than a rally belonging to any particular political party and urged citizens to unite in defence of democratic rights.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has highlighted the importance of the Diwali shopping season for businesses in Delhi. It estimates that the proposed protest could affect trade worth nearly ₹10,000 crore in areas around Ramlila Maidan and has requested that the event be held after November 10. Responding to traders’ concerns, Rahul alleged that restrictions on metro services and road closures were already inconveniencing people. He argued that protecting voting rights was essential for safeguarding citizens’ interests and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest and the traders’ appeal have brought the political demonstration and its potential commercial impact into focus.
