Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha has clarified that the Election Commission remains neutral and will order re-polling only when sufficient evidence is available. He stated that reports from district collectors and superintendents of police, along with supporting evidence, are essential before taking such a decision. Responding to complaints about incidents in Anantapur and Palnadu districts, Punetha said that the Commission would examine Presiding Officers’ reports and webcasting footage before deciding on further action. Speaking to the media after the conclusion of polling in urban local body elections on Sunday evening, he said that polling was largely peaceful across the state. Although minor disputes were reported in a few districts, most areas witnessed smooth polling. He also revealed that voter turnout stood at 48.3% by 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Punetha said that polling in Annamayya district was peaceful and that he had discussed three complaints from Madanapalle with the district collector. He also reviewed a complaint from Prakasam district, but officials reportedly found no supporting evidence. Regarding reports that YSRCP agents were absent at 70 polling stations in Pulivendula, he said complainants were asked to provide the agents’ details so that police protection could be arranged. In Vijayawada’s 55th division, polling was extended until 7:30 p.m. after a discrepancy in ballot paper symbols halted voting for about 90 minutes. Meanwhile, IG Rajakumari said that 275 FIRs had been registered and 107 people arrested since the nomination process began. She added that 40 incidents were reported during Sunday’s polling and assured that action would be taken wherever offences were established.
