Japan was jolted by a magnitude 5.9 earthquake early Sunday, with strong tremors felt across eastern Japan, including the Tokyo metropolitan area. According to Japanese authorities, the earthquake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture at around 2 a.m., at a depth of approximately 70 kilometres. Several areas recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 5 lower on Japan’s scale.
The tremor disrupted transportation and caused minor damage in some areas. Initial reports said five people had been injured, but subsequent updates from Japanese authorities raised the number to 37, including one seriously injured person. Water-supply disruptions were also reported in parts of Tokyo. Authorities confirmed that there was no tsunami threat and urged residents to remain cautious about possible aftershocks.
