Iran has reportedly invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to diplomatic sources. The invitation was extended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while an official response from the Government of India is still awaited. Multi-day funeral ceremonies are expected to be held in Iran in early July, with events planned in Tehran and Qom before the final burial in Khamenei's hometown of Mashhad.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported killed during the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel earlier this year. Following his death, Mojtaba Khamenei was selected as Iran's new Supreme Leader. The invitation to Prime Minister Modi is being viewed as an important diplomatic gesture reflecting the longstanding relationship between India and Iran. There has been no official confirmation from New Delhi regarding the Prime Minister's participation in the ceremonies.
