The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a historic milestone in military aviation after its IL-76MD heavy transport aircraft, popularly known as ‘Gajraj’, successfully landed at the Mudh-Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 13,629 feet. According to the IAF, this is the highest-ever landing by an IL-76 aircraft anywhere in the world. The achievement highlights the aircraft's operational capabilities and the exceptional precision and expertise of its crew. Landing a massive four-engine transport aircraft at such an altitude is particularly challenging because thin air reduces engine performance and aerodynamic lift, demanding careful calculations and precise handling.
The Nyoma airbase, located in the strategically important Changthang region of eastern Ladakh, is approximately 25 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Its upgraded runway and infrastructure have strengthened India's military logistics and airlift capabilities in the region. The latest achievement will further improve the IAF's ability to transport troops, heavy equipment, ammunition and essential supplies to forward areas, particularly when harsh weather conditions disrupt road connectivity. The historic landing also demonstrates India's growing operational preparedness and the ability of its aircrew to overcome the challenges of high-altitude Himalayan terrain.
