A major milestone has been achieved under the Green India Challenge, inspired by Telangana leader and former Chief Minister Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao. On February 17, marking his birthday, 20,000 mangrove saplings were planted in the Sundarbans delta region of West Bengal. Within just three months, these saplings have grown up to nearly three feet, transforming the area into a thriving green zone. The Green India Challenge team, led by former MP Joginipally Santosh Kumar, inspected the site on June 9, 2026, and expressed satisfaction over the impressive growth achieved through scientific methods, geo-tagging, and continuous monitoring.
The Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest spread across India and Bangladesh, plays a crucial role in protecting coastal regions from cyclones and preserving biodiversity. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this region highlights the importance of ecological conservation. Since its inception in 2018, the Green India Challenge has planted over 195 million saplings and revived more than 20,000 water bodies. Environmental organization Ignited Minds praised the initiative, stating that such efforts offer a scalable model for global ecological restoration and inspire collective action for a sustainable future.
