Sri Lanka has witnessed a sharp rise in fuel prices, reflecting the country's ongoing economic challenges and efforts to stabilize its financial system. According to recent reports, the price of petrol has increased to approximately ₹434 per litre (around $1.33), while diesel is being sold at about ₹407 per litre. The latest revision has added to the financial burden on consumers and businesses already coping with higher living costs.
The fuel price hike comes as Sri Lanka continues implementing economic reforms under the guidance of international financial institutions. Following the severe economic crisis that peaked in 2022, the country secured a $2.9 billion assistance package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2023. Authorities maintain that these measures are necessary to restore economic stability, strengthen public finances, and support long-term recovery.
