Advising families not to spend ₹20 lakh merely to impress relatives, Goyal highlighted how significant amounts are often spent on food, venues, decorations, photography, entertainment and other wedding expenses. She noted that while the celebrations last only a day or two, the financial impact can remain with families for years.

According to Goyal, the same amount could instead be used as a down payment for a home, an emergency fund, long-term investments or future education expenses. She urged couples to begin married life with financial stability rather than debt, saying that a wedding is a celebration—not a financial burden. Her views have sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that extravagant weddings place unnecessary pressure on middle-class families, while others argued that people should be free to spend on a once-in-a-lifetime celebration according to their preferences.
