Diwali holds a special place among Indian festivals, with homes and streets illuminated by lamps and celebrations filled with fireworks. As people across the state prepare for the festival, firecracker sales are picking up, and shops are witnessing heavy crowds. However, celebrations can turn dangerous if fireworks are handled carelessly. To avoid injuries and unpleasant memories, people should never mix alcohol with firecrackers, avoid bursting crackers indoors, and purchase sealed packs from reputed manufacturers.
Children should never be allowed to burst crackers without adult supervision. Fireworks must be used only in open spaces, away from petrol stations, gas storage facilities, huts, temporary shops and other flammable materials. Crackers should be lit using long incense sticks or candles, keeping them at a safe distance from the body and face. People should avoid looking closely at fireworks that fail to explode and keep at least two buckets of water nearby as a precaution. In case of minor burns, cool the affected area with clean running water. If clothes catch fire, cover the flames with a clean cotton bedsheet or blanket and seek immediate medical attention. Any firecracker injury to the face or eyes requires urgent medical evaluation.
