TRAI Brings Good News for Prepaid Users

Prepaid mobile users are set to get more flexible recharge options under the latest telecom consumer protection rules. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced provisions for voice and SMS only Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs), including options with 30 day or shorter validity. The move is aimed at giving consumers more choices based on their usage and budget.

TRAI notified the Telecom Consumers Protection (13th Amendment) Regulations, 2026 on September 22. Under the new framework, telecom operators have to offer voice and SMS only vouchers corresponding to the validity periods of bundled voice, SMS and data plans, including plans valid for 30 days or less. The rules also provide for a voice and SMS only voucher that can be renewed on the same date every month.

Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha welcomed the changes, saying they address concerns he had raised earlier over 28 day recharge cycles and the lack of options for users who do not need mobile data. He had pointed out that 28 day monthly plans could require users to recharge 13 times a year. The new 30 day options could reduce the need for monthly recharges to 12 for users who choose such plans. The changes are also expected to provide more suitable options for people who mainly use their phones for calls and SMS.
