Offline UPI Payments Coming Soon

India’s Digital Payments System is set for another major upgrade as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a new feature that will enable UPI payments even without an internet connection. The feature will allow users to make payments of up to ₹2,000 in areas with poor or no network connectivity. It will work using Near Field Communication (NFC) based "Tap-to-Pay" technology, ensuring seamless offline transactions.

According to reports, users will first need to load money into an on-device UPI Lite wallet while connected to the internet. Later, they can simply tap their NFC enabled smartphone on a certified offline Point of Sale (POS) terminal to complete the payment without entering a UPI PIN. The POS terminal will store the transaction details and sync them once internet connectivity is restored. The feature is expected to benefit users in flights, underground metro stations, and remote villages where network access is limited.
