Economist Nouriel Roubini, widely known for anticipating the 2008 global financial crisis, has expressed confidence in India’s long-term economic prospects. He said India could emerge as one of the world’s largest economic powers over the coming decades. However, he believes the country needs to raise its economic growth rate to 9% to generate enough quality jobs for its young workforce. India’s large domestic market, skilled talent pool and macroeconomic foundations could support sustained growth. According to Roubini, growth of 7% may not be sufficient to create the employment opportunities needed by the country’s expanding workforce.
Roubini also highlighted the opportunities India could gain from shifts in global trade and manufacturing. Companies seeking to reduce their dependence on China are exploring alternative production bases in sectors such as electronics, automobiles and semiconductors. India’s domestic market and trade ties with the United States could help attract additional investment. However, he cautioned that a large population alone does not guarantee economic gains; job creation remains essential. As artificial intelligence reshapes employment, expanding opportunities in manufacturing, logistics and supply chains will be important. He also expressed confidence that ongoing reforms could raise India’s growth potential above 8%, according to the report.
