Discussions are underway over the possible introduction of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on UPI transactions, which have become a major part of India’s digital payment ecosystem. Government sources suggest that the Centre is considering imposing MDR charges on merchants using UPI payments. The charges are expected to remain below 0.5 percent. However, industry experts have expressed mixed opinions on the proposal.
Experts warn that additional charges on UPI transactions could increase the burden on merchants and may eventually affect customers through reduced offers and higher prices. Small businesses, including tea stalls and grocery stores, could also face an impact due to extra costs. Industry representatives suggest maintaining a balanced approach to support digital payments, consumer demand, and continued investment in the payment ecosystem.
