Banks Collected ₹7,087 Crore for Not Maintaining Minimum Balance in Accounts

Banks in India earned a total of ₹7,087 crore in the financial year 2025–26 by charging customers for not maintaining the minimum balance in their accounts. According to data presented in Parliament by the Ministry of Finance, private sector banks accounted for ₹4,948.71 crore of the total collections, while public sector banks collected ₹2,137.92 crore through such penalties.

Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that among individual banks, HDFC Bank collected the highest amount of ₹1,798.14 crore, followed by Axis Bank with ₹1,081.33 crore. These charges were levied on savings and current accounts that failed to maintain the required average minimum balance during the financial year.
