While most employees commute to work by bike, car, or metro, a Google software engineer has taken commuting to an extraordinary level. Hong (Jason) Wei, who works in the Flow-AI (image and video generation) division at Google, has become a “super commuter” by flying between Seattle and San Jose every week. He chose this demanding lifestyle to balance his professional growth at Google’s Bay Area headquarters while supporting his partner’s thriving career at Amazon in Seattle. Wei stated that his decision was driven by the desire to protect both his relationship and career without compromising either.
Despite the challenges, Wei maintains a strict weekly schedule, traveling to California at the start of the week and returning to Seattle by the weekend. His monthly commuting expenses, including flights, rent in two cities, Uber charges, and taxes, amount to around $3,000 (approximately ₹2.8 lakh). Even with such a busy routine, he continues to pursue creative interests by running a personal newsletter with about 500 subscribers. Wei believes that the growth and experience he gains far outweigh the costs, making him a striking example of modern professionals going to great lengths for both career and relationships.
