Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Must Wait for His Chance- Gautam Gambhir

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not get an opportunity in any of the three T20Is against Afghanistan, despite entering the series after an impressive Zimbabwe tour. India head coach Gautam Gambhir explained that the decision was based on the team’s combination and the performances of established players. According to Gambhir, Sanju Samson had demonstrated his ability at the highest level, including during India’s World Cup campaign, and returning to the successful combination was an important consideration.

Gambhir said leaving Samson out during the England series was one of the toughest decisions of his coaching tenure. He added that a player does not suddenly become a poor performer after a few failures, particularly when the same group had remained unbeaten from one World Cup to the next and won the title. On Sooryavanshi, Gambhir said the 15-year-old will have to wait for his opportunity. He stressed that players who have performed consistently for a longer period will initially be ahead of newcomers, but when Sooryavanshi gets his chance, he is expected to receive a longer run.
