India's Tanvi Patri scripted history at the Youth Olympics by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the women's singles badminton final at the event. In a closely fought semifinal on Wednesday, she defeated Japan's Yuzuno Watanabe 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 to secure her place in the title clash. Tanvi started strongly, winning the opening game comfortably, but Watanabe fought back to take the second. In the deciding game, the Indian shuttler held her nerve and clinched a hard-fought victory to book her place in the final.
Tanvi will now compete for the gold medal on Thursday. Before her, three Indian shuttlers had reached the semifinals of the Youth Olympics. Prannoy won a silver medal in 2010, while Lakshya Sen also claimed silver in 2018. Aditya, however, failed to win a medal. With her historic entry into the final, Tanvi has a chance to become the first Indian woman to win a Youth Olympics badminton singles gold.
