India’s newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill shared his thoughts after officially taking over leadership from Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format. Speaking to the media ahead of the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi, Gill revealed that he was informed about the decision just before it was publicly announced by BCCI’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar. He said that leading the national side is a huge honour and responsibility, and expressed his excitement for the journey ahead. Gill, who has already been serving as India’s Test captain, emphasized that he wants to stay focused on the present and not dwell on past achievements, adding that his goal is to win every series and tournament in the upcoming months.
Gill also spoke about his relationship with former captain Rohit Sharma, under whom he has played for several years. Although Rohit is no longer part of the Test and T20 setup, Gill will have his guidance during the ODI series in Australia. Reflecting on his learnings from Rohit, Gill said he deeply admires his calmness, composure, and ability to build strong bonds within the team. He added that these are qualities he hopes to carry forward in his own leadership style as India’s new captain.
