The United States began its FIFA World Cup campaign on a high note with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium. The hosts took an early lead in the seventh minute through an own goal by Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla following pressure from Weston McKennie. Folarin Balogun then stole the spotlight with two clinical first-half goals in the 31st and 44th minutes, giving the United States complete control of the match.
Paraguay managed to reduce the deficit through Mauricio in the 73rd minute, but any hopes of a comeback were ended when Giovanni Reyna scored deep into stoppage time. With strong contributions from Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman and Alex Freeman, the United States delivered one of the most impressive performances of the opening round and secured a convincing victory.
