In a significant economic milestone, the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited - RINL) has officially returned to the path of profitability. Bolstered by the proactive cooperation of both the Central and State governments, the plant recorded a net profit of ₹54 crore in January 2026. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the plant's progress at the Secretariat on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by Union Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik, Vizag Steel CMD Manish Raj Gupta, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, and other top officials.
The plant is currently producing 19,401 tonnes of hot metal per day, a massive jump from the 9,215 tonnes produced daily during the second quarter of 2024-25.
The plant's capacity utilization has reached a record 94%, compared to a struggling 45% just a year ago.
All three blast furnaces are now fully operational, driving the surge in output.
Officials attributed this recovery to the ₹11,440 crore assistance package from the Central Government and critical support from the State Government regarding tax concessions, electricity dues, and uninterrupted water supply.
Following the profit of ₹54 crore in January, the credit rating for RINL has seen a positive upward revision.
During the review, CM Chandrababu Naidu expressed satisfaction with the progress and credited the success to the collective efforts of workers, employees, and the government. He urged officials to introduce innovative policies across all departments to further strengthen the plant’s global competitiveness.
"The revival of Vizag Steel is a testament to what can be achieved when the Center and State work in tandem for the welfare of the industry and its workers," the CM noted.
