The Telangana government has decided to bifurcate the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)—currently the country’s largest civic body with 300 divisions—into three separate municipal corporations from February 10. With the present corporators’ term coming to an end, the city will move into Special Officer administration after 17 years, sparking wide public interest over the structure, population, and jurisdiction of the new corporations. Under this arrangement, the state government will appoint Special Officers with powers equivalent to that of a mayor to oversee civic governance in the absence of elected bodies.
According to official plans, GHMC will be restricted to six zones with a population of around 70 lakh, while two new civic bodies—Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC)—will be created with three zones each, accommodating an average population of 35 lakh per corporation. The reorganised GHMC will include Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Charminar, Khairatabad, Golconda and Secunderabad zones. MMC will comprise Malkajgiri, LB Nagar and Uppal, while CMC will cover Kukatpally, Serilingampally and Quthbullapur. Officials say the restructuring aims to ensure better administration and governance in a rapidly expanding metropolis with a population of 1.34 crore.
