Devotees may soon be allowed into the sanctum of the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple in Odisha. The area is currently filled with sand. To protect a 15-foot-high rear wall from collapse, British authorities filled the sanctum with thousands of tons of sand in 1903 – 04.
The space, known as the Jagamohan Hall, remained closed for over a century. The Archaeological Survey of India, along with experts from IIT Madras, has now started removing the sand. Officials say the entire process may take around three months.
After the sand is cleared, the strength of the inner walls will be examined. Based on the findings, a final decision will be taken on the sanctum’s restoration.
