A final-year Computer Science and Engineering student at IIT Hyderabad has created a sensation by securing a record annual package of ₹2.5 crore. Edward Nathan Varghese received the offer from Netherlands-based global trading firm Optiver, marking the highest package since IIT Hyderabad’s inception in 2008. The offer came as a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) following a two-month summer internship, where Varghese stood out as the only intern among the selected candidates to receive a PPO.
The 21-year-old, who will join Optiver’s Netherlands office as a Software Engineer from July, credited his success to consistent performance in competitive programming, where he ranked among the top 100 nationally, along with guidance from mentors and the IIT brand. The placement season has seen strong outcomes overall, including another CSE student securing a ₹1.1 crore package. IIT Hyderabad reported a 75% rise in average salaries to ₹36.2 lakh, with 62% of 487 UG students placed in Phase-1. The institute emphasized its focus on expanding opportunities across tech and core engineering roles, with more domestic firms expected in Phase-2.
