India is witnessing an alarming rise in diabetes cases, with nearly 200 million people affected nationwide. Recent studies reveal that 100 million people are already living with diabetes, while another 136 million are in the pre-diabetic stage. Rapid lifestyle changes, urbanisation, unhealthy food habits, lack of physical activity, and increasing obesity are cited as key reasons behind this growing health concern.
According to the ICMR–INDIAB study, the overall prevalence of diabetes in India stands at 11.4 percent. Urban areas report a higher prevalence of 14.2 percent, while rural regions record 8.3 percent. Health experts warn that these numbers indicate a looming public health crisis and stress the importance of early diagnosis, lifestyle modification, and regular health check-ups to curb the spread of diabetes.
