A special tribunal in Bangladesh has delivered a major verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The country had witnessed intense student-led protests last year, which escalated into widespread violence and caused hundreds of deaths.
Amid the unrest, Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh and sought refuge in New Delhi. Since being removed from power, she has remained in India and has not returned.
The tribunal has now announced its judgment, and the outcome is highly significant. Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death, with the court delivering the verdict in her absence while she continues to stay in India.
According to the tribunal, she has been found guilty of crimes against humanity linked to the 36-day protests held in July–August 2024. Reports suggest that nearly 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown allegedly carried out under her orders.
The sentence will come into effect only if she returns to Bangladesh. When or whether that will happen still remains uncertain.
