The prestigious film Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan and directed by Sudha Kongara, has landed in controversy soon after its worldwide release on January 10. Despite overcoming multiple hurdles and disputes before release, the period political action drama is now facing strong opposition, with demands emerging to ban the film in Tamil Nadu. The controversy has extended beyond Kollywood, creating ripples in South Indian political circles as well.
The core issue revolves around the film’s depiction of the 1965 anti-Hindi agitation in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Youth Congress has accused the makers of distorting history, alleging that certain scenes disrespect former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and senior Congress leaders of that era. Youth Congress leader Arun Bhaskar stated that scenes showing Sivakarthikeyan’s character meeting Indira Gandhi are fictional and lack historical evidence, warning that such portrayals could mislead the younger generation. While political pressure mounts and social media debates intensify with hashtags demanding both a ban and support, the film’s team is yet to issue an official response.
