Senior actress Namitha, once celebrated as a glamour queen in South Indian cinema, earned recognition with successful films such as ‘Simha’, ‘Billa’, ‘Sontham’ and ‘Alaghiya Tamil Magan’. Although she has stayed away from films to some extent after marriage, she continues to interact with fans through social media. Her recent comments on marriage traditions and the social expectations placed on women have now sparked a debate.
In a recent interview, Namitha questioned why women alone are expected to follow traditions such as wearing a mangalsutra and bindi after marriage. Speaking about rituals performed for a husband’s well-being, she asked whether husbands are similarly expected to observe practices for their wives’ health and longevity. She opined that many such customs were not created by God but were shaped by society and imposed on women for its own convenience. Her remarks have received both support and criticism online.
