Long Gaps Between Star Films.. Theatres in Crisis

The Telugu film industry’s theatrical exhibition sector is facing growing challenges, particularly single-screen theatres. Film producers and industry analysts believe the widening gap between releases of star-led films is one of the major factors behind the slowdown. While leading actors once released at least one or two films a year, several stars now spend two to three years on a single project. The extended production timelines are increasing budgets and interest costs for producers while also creating a shortage of major theatrical releases.

The release gap among Telugu cinema’s biggest stars has become increasingly noticeable. Prabhas has appeared in ‘The Raja Saab’ and is expected to follow it with ‘Fauzi’, while the release timeline for Ram Charan’s next film remains unclear. Allu Arjun’s next project ‘Raaka’ is reportedly planned for 2027, while Mahesh Babu is set to return with S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’ in 2027. NTR is also expected to arrive with Prashanth Neel’s ‘Dragon’ in 2027. Industry observers say the shortage of major-star releases is affecting audience footfall and putting additional pressure on single-screen theatres.
