Indian Cinema Needs More Women Directors and Writers: Malavika Mohanan

Malavika Mohanan has stressed the need for more women directors and writers in Indian cinema, arguing that greater female representation behind the camera could lead to more diverse and layered portrayals of women on screen. Speaking in an interview with Variety India, she observed that the limited number of female creators often results in women being portrayed in similar ways in mainstream films. Malavika believes that more stories told from women’s perspectives could introduce audiences to fresh narratives and distinctive characters. She also feels that greater participation by female filmmakers could pave the way for stronger roles for women even in action-oriented cinema.

Malavika said Indian cinema needs more powerful female-led stories in the mould of ‘Kill Bill’, adding that women writers and directors could play an important role in bringing such narratives to the mainstream. She also praised Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan, saying she was particularly impressed by the way its female characters were presented. Looking ahead, Malavika said she does not want to remain confined to glamorous roles and would prefer varied characters that allow her to demonstrate her acting abilities. She added that she is always open to projects offering a compelling story and a strong role.
